Cleft lip repair is typically performed within the first 3-6 months of life, and abnormal lip muscles are corrected and the gap is closed. Concurrently, the cartilage of the cleft nostril is also reshaped and repositioned.
After which, palate repair is performed around 9 months of age before the child learns to speak. We reposition the abnormal muscles and this gives the child a better chance of speaking normally.
Alveolar bone grafting is performed around the age of 9-11 years. We perform a bone graft from the hip to fill in the bony gap in the alveolus, allowing tooth development and eruption to take place.
Following which, secondary revision Plastic Surgery is done to help improve scars and fine tune the appearance of the lip and nose.
